An abstract graphic that hints at cyberspace.

Getting the most out of the professional and business associations you belong to is something I’m always talking about with my clients.

Most of these organizations have websites, newsletters, magazines, and social media accounts they need to fill with useful content. Some of them make a point of highlighting their members whenever possible. Putting yourself and your work forward when there is an opportunity to get before a bigger audience is a great way to raise your profile.

The State Bar of Wisconsin has a tool that makes this easy. WisLawNOW is a bar-sponsored blogging platform that pulls content from the websites of Wisconsin attorneys and puts it all in one place. The bar then sends out an email digest of some of the top articles. This makes it easy to get your writing in front of more people, and is a great way to see what is going on in other practice areas or regions.

A recent article in the bar’s Inside Track newsletter highlights the service. It also includes some blogging tips from yours truly!

This is just one example of how you can leverage your membership in a professional or business organization to get more out of your marketing efforts. I brainstorm with my clients on ways to help them increase the marketing value of their memberships in organizations like their local or state chamber of commerce, social and service organizations, and groups they belong to as a hobby.

Emily S. Kelchen founded Kelchen Consulting after realizing the free time she spent building websites and experimenting with social media-driven marketing and advocacy was much more fun than working as a traditional lobbyist. Emily is active in both the New Jersey and Wisconsin state bar associations, and is a member of the American Bar Association. She is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s communications committee and on the board of its Nonresident Lawyers Division. Emily graduated from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, with a degree in political science, and earned her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison, WI. She currently resides in Flemington, NJ, and therefore relishes any opportunity to talk about the Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial.
