Wisconsin Watch has some unemployment claim-filing tips to offer.
These tips are largely based on the unemployment primer, with an extra focus on Wisconsin’s work search requirements — do five work searches per week rather than just the four required work searches — and the documentation you need to retain about those work searches for the eventual work search audit that will come your way.
These tips also include my advice to file weekly certifications for the past week on week days rather than immediately on Sunday, the first day of the new week. That way, you can (and should) call the Department at 414-435-7069 / 844-910-3661 with questions about anything and everything that comes up when filing those weekly certifications.
Note: Your initial claim — where you report the start of your unemployment — should also be filed on a weekday so that you can also call DWD with any questions and ask for guidance.
Finally, these tips have some excellent links to the Department’s resources for work search requirements and work search documentation requirements as well as job separation disqualifications.
These links are essential. For instance, separation information is needed because the Department will examine and even disqualify you from receiving unemployment benefits when you quit a job without good cause BEFORE claiming unemployment benefits when laid off several months later from your primary job.
