1. The North Carolina Medical Facilities Plan has identified a need for 267 more hospital beds in Wake County, NC. Duke Health, Novant Health, UNC Health and WakeMed have all filed proposals for projects in the area.
  2. Children’s hospitals are performing well today, but experts believe Medicaid cuts that go into effect next year could significantly impact their performance. Children’s hospitals rely heavily on Medicaid funding. On average, Medicaid revenue accounts for 51% of the gross revenue of children’s hospitals. In contrast, Medicaid funding accounts for only 15%, on average, of the funding received by adult hospitals.
  3. Philanthropy continues to play an important role in new hospital building projects. Sutter Health announced a $30M gift that will be used to fund a new 44,000-sf cancer center in Santa Cruz, CA, and Tampa General announced a $10M gift that will fund a new operating room renovation at its Davis Islands campus in Tampa, FL.
  4. Nationwide Children’s has received approval to build a new 170,000-sf outpatient facility in New Albany, OH that will offer urgent care services, diagnostic testing, specialty clinics and physical, occupational and speech therapy. The project will be developed on 25 acres donated to Nationwide by billionaire Les Wexner.
  5. Hospitals continue to look for ways to develop affordable housing near their hospital campuses in order to attract and retain clinicians. Elizabethtown Community Hospital (NY) announced an investment in a middle-market housing project near its campus, and St. John’s Health (WY) raised funds for a housing project in its community.
  6. State officials are actively looking for ways to fund new inpatient behavioral health facilities. Officials in North Dakota announced a new $300M behavioral hospital in Jamestown, ND, and Montana officials announced plans for a new $26M behavioral hospital near Billings, MT.
  7. MUSC (SC) recently opened a new $100M regional behavioral health hub in Florence, SC. The facility will offer crisis stabilization, telehealth and outpatient and inpatient services.
  8. Intermountain (UT) recently opened a new 90,000-sf pediatric behavioral health facility in West Taylorsville, UT. The facility was made possible by philanthropic donations and a $25M investment by the State of Utah.
  9. Delaware officials broke ground on a new $90M, 120-bed long-term care hospital that will be located in Smyrna, DE. The project will be funded, in part, by the American Rescue Act and in part by a state bond issue.
  10. Ascension and Lifepoint Health are teaming up to develop a new 40-bed inpatient rehab hospital in Clarksville, TN. If approved, this will be the second hospital proposed by Ascension in Clarksville.
