- UnitedHealth Group Inc. has completed its $3.3B acquisition of Amedisys, a company that operates over 500 home health and hospice sites throughout the country.
- During a recent U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee hearing, legislators criticized tax-exempt hospitals for failing to provide adequate charity care and community benefits in excess of the estimated $37.4B in tax benefits they received in 2021.
- Community Hospital Corporation (TX) announced plans to build a $400M state-of-the-art acute care hospital within the Heritage Ranch Master Planned Community in Sherman, Texas. The new hospital will include 100 inpatient beds with capacity for up to 200 additional inpatient beds.
- Florida State University (FSU) and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMHC) have entered into an agreement to create a new academic medical center in Tallahassee, Florida. Under the agreement, TMHC will transfer certain operating assets to FSU, and FSU will lease TMHC’s 2M-sf hospital under a 40-year lease agreement.
- Hall Render published an article on the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) ongoing scrutiny of non-compete clauses in employment agreements with health care providers. The FTC recently issued a press release about the use of “unreasonable” non-compete clauses.
- A recent article describes Duke Health’s strategy for expanding in North Carolina. In April, Duke paid $284M to acquire Lake Norman Regional in Mooresville, and recently announced a partnership with Novant Health to open joint campuses across the state. According to the article, Duke is planning to create a regional health system that will touch more than 25% of the lives in the state.
- Cone Health (NC) has received state certificate of need (CON) approval to build a new 46-bed acute care hospital in Mebane, NC. Cone Health’s CON application was selected over another application submitted by Duke Health and Novant Health.
- Ascension Via Christi (KS) is moving forward with plans to rezone and sell 110 acres of land near its St. Teresa campus in Wichita, KS. The property is expected to be developed for commercial use.
- PeaceHealth (WA) plans to sell 50 acres of undeveloped residential property near its Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, IL. PeaceHealth is hoping that the property will be used to expand housing production goals in the area.
- Harris Health (TX) has announced plans to use eminent domain to acquire nearly nine acres of land within Hermann Park in Houston, Texas. The land is needed for the planned expansion of Ben Taub Hospital.
